EV charging in Pakistan has grown fast over the last two years. In fact, you can now find fast chargers at fuel stations, malls and motorway service areas. However, the network is still thin outside big cities. So this guide explains who runs the chargers, how fast they are, what they cost and how to find one.
Charger locations and prices change often. Therefore, always check the latest status on an app or by phone before a long trip.
How EV Charging in Pakistan Works
An electric car stores power in a large battery. You then refill it by plugging into a charger, much like you refill a phone. However, the speed depends on the charger type and on your car.
There are three main ways to charge. Firstly, you can charge at home from a wall socket or a wall box. Secondly, you can use slower AC chargers at malls, hotels and offices. Finally, you can use DC fast chargers at fuel stations and motorway stops.
Generally, most owners do most of their charging at home overnight. So public chargers are mainly for long trips or for people without parking at home. As a result, home charging remains the backbone of EV charging in Pakistan.
Charging also slows down as the battery fills. For example, a DC charger works fastest from about 20 to 80 percent. After that, the car slows the flow to protect the battery. In other words, the last 20 percent can take as long as a big part of the rest.
Types of Chargers and Charging Speeds
We measure charging speed in kilowatts (kW). In short, a higher number means a faster charge, as long as your car can accept it.
| Charger Type | Typical Power | Rough Time to Add Good Range | Where You Find It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home socket | About 2 to 3 kW | Overnight or longer | Your home |
| AC wall box | 7 to 22 kW | 3 to 8 hours | Homes, malls, hotels |
| DC fast charger | 30 to 60 kW | Under 1 hour for a big top-up | Fuel stations, dealers |
| DC high-power | 90 to 160 kW | 20 to 40 minutes | Some motorway sites |
Also, check your car’s plug. Many stations here offer CCS2 for DC and Type 2 for AC. However, some sites also have GB/T or CHAdeMO plugs, so confirm what your car uses before you drive to a station.
Who Runs Public EV Charging in Pakistan?
Several companies now run public chargers. Generally, these are the main names you will see.
- PSO with BYD and HUBCO Green: In June 2025 they opened DC fast chargers at the PSO Magic River stop on the M-2. Their plan is 128 DC fast chargers between Karachi and Peshawar.
- HUBCO Green: By December 2025 it had eight DC fast-charging stations in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. It works with PSO, Attock Petroleum and PARCO Gunvor.
- Attock Petroleum: It is building DC fast chargers with partners, including HUBCO Green and Huawei.
- Shell Pakistan: Its website lists a few Shell Recharge rapid chargers in Karachi.
- BYD dealerships: Some dealers in big cities also offer charging for customers.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government has approved plans for hundreds of new stations with private partners. Overall, most growth is happening along the Karachi to Peshawar route and in the three biggest cities. In other words, the future of EV charging in Pakistan depends on fuel companies and car brands working together.
EV Charging in Pakistan on Motorways and Highways
Long trips are the real test for any EV owner. Fortunately, the main motorways now have chargers at several service areas. In fact, many owners now plan trips around EV charging stations on motorway rest areas, especially on the M-2. A PakWheels report from April 2026 listed these locations, among others.
| Route | Reported Charging Points |
|---|---|
| M-2 Lahore to Islamabad | Bhera, Kallar Kahar, Pindi Bhattian, Dharrabi, Ravi area |
| M-1 Islamabad to Peshawar | Rashakai |
| M-4 Pindi Bhattian to Multan | Gojra, Abdul Hakeem |
| M-5 Multan to Sukkur | Zahir Pir |
| M-9 Karachi to Hyderabad | Nooriabad |
| N-5 GT Road | Kharian, Moro |
However, some sites have only slow AC chargers, and a few go out of service. For this reason, call the motorway police helpline 130 or check an app before you leave. Also, keep extra range as a buffer, especially in summer when the AC runs all the time.
If you use the motorway often, an M-Tag for the motorway saves time at toll plazas too.
City Charging: Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad
Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad have the most public chargers by far. Generally, you will find them at big fuel stations, shopping malls, hotels and car dealerships. For example, HUBCO Green opened its first station at Ocean Mall in Karachi in January 2025.
By contrast, smaller cities like Multan, Faisalabad and Peshawar have fewer options. Similarly, hill stations such as Murree and Nathia Gali have a few chargers at hotels. Even so, do not plan a northern trip without checking each stop first.
If you live in a flat or a house without parking, public city chargers matter more. In that case, pick a car with a big battery so you charge less often.
How to Find EV Charging Stations in Pakistan
This is, after all, the most common question new owners ask. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to find EV charging stations in Pakistan.
- Google Maps: Search “EV charging station” near you. Then check recent photos and reviews, because some listings are old.
- ChargePK app: A free local app on Android and iPhone. It shows a charger map, a trip planner and a cost calculator.
- PSO website: PSO has an EV station locator page for its own sites.
- Your car dealer: BYD, MG and other dealers know the working chargers in your city.
- Owner groups: Facebook and WhatsApp groups for EV owners share real-time updates.
Above all, call the station before a long drive. In fact, a quick call can save you hours of waiting at a broken charger.
EV Charging Price in Pakistan: NEPRA Tariff and Station Rates
Here is how pricing works. NEPRA sets the base rate that charging stations pay for electricity. In April 2025, NEPRA cut this base rate to about Rs 23.57 per unit and removed the old cap on station margins.
As a result, each operator now adds its own margin. So the price you pay at the plug is much higher than the base rate. In 2026, listing sites show DC fast charging at roughly Rs 100 to Rs 150 per unit at many stations. On the other hand, AC public chargers are usually cheaper than DC.
In short, EV charging in Pakistan costs far less at home than at a fast charger. Always ask the rate per unit (kWh) before you plug in. Also, check whether the station adds parking fees or a minimum charge.
Home vs Public Charging Cost
Home charging follows your normal electricity bill. For example, the 2026 residential slab rates run from about Rs 22 to Rs 48 per unit before taxes. Therefore, home charging is almost always cheaper than a fast charger.
| Charging Option | Approx. Cost per Unit | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Home, lower slab | About Rs 22 to Rs 33 before taxes | Daily city driving |
| Home, higher slab | About Rs 40 to Rs 48 before taxes | Heavy users |
| Public DC fast | Roughly Rs 100 to Rs 150 | Long trips |
However, heavy charging can push your home bill into a higher slab. Because of this, some owners charge mostly at night and keep an eye on monthly units.
Planning a Long Trip with EV Charging in Pakistan
Long trips need a little homework. However, a simple plan removes most of the stress.
- Note the real summer range of your car, not the brochure figure.
- Mark two charging stops on your route, in case one is busy or broken.
- Leave with a full battery and reach each stop with at least 20 percent left.
- Keep the AC on a sensible setting, because a high fan speed cuts range.
- Keep the station app ready, as well as cash and a card.
Hill roads need extra care. For instance, long climbs use more power, although downhill stretches give some back through regenerative braking. Before a northern trip, read how to prepare your car for a trip to the northern areas.
Step-by-Step: Your First Public Charge
First-time charging feels confusing, but it is simple. Follow these steps.
- Park in the EV bay and switch off the car.
- Check the plug type and the price per unit on the screen.
- Start the session with the app, card or attendant, as the station requires.
- Plug in firmly until the car shows it is charging.
- Stop around 80 percent on a DC charger, since the last part is slow.
- End the session, unplug and pay.
Also, stay near the car while it charges. In fact, many fast sessions finish within an hour, so a tea break at the service area is usually enough. However, move the car once it is done, since others may be waiting.
Problems and Safety Tips
Public charging is still young here, so expect some problems. For instance, a charger may be offline, occupied or slower than its label. Similarly, load shedding can affect some city sites.
- Never use a damaged cable or a wet plug.
- Avoid charging during heavy rain if the bay is open and flooded.
- Do not leave the car blocking a charger after it is full.
- Keep a home charging plan, because public chargers are not yet reliable everywhere.
Even so, EV charging in Pakistan improves every few months as new sites open. Therefore, check your app regularly for fresh locations.
